Values in Action

40 Liter Recycling Can (1).jpg

Windthrow believes in protecting Mother Earth. This value goes beyond sustainable packaging and carbon-neutral shipping. It goes beyond sourcing wood from private owners and trees that have already been cut down. This value permeates into our personal lives outside the business. Over the last decade, I’ve noticed that the size of my waste basket directly correlated to the amount of waste I produce. And I was recently determined to fix this.

With my recent move to Baltimore, MD, I had the chance to start with a blank slate. I chose to have a small trash can (3 liters), a medium compost bin (19 liters), and a large recycling can (40 liters) (see image). These tools allow me to live within my values. These tools set me up for success and hold me accountable.

And it is going great! I produce very little trash week to week. And I love my compost subscription service. (Big shout out to Compost Cab in Baltimore, MD!) These tools help me shop online less, think about what I have, and think about what’s important to me. Some weeks I have more trash than others - I’m still learning. And while I would love to live in a zero-trash household, I know this goal is far away. For the time being, I am happy to put my values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), shmirat ha-adamah (caring for the earth), and kavod (respect for the people and world around me) into action each and every day.
