Stackable Sculpture
Here is a custom project, made from a single chunk of walnut. This project is particularly exciting because it is for a couple I’ve worked with before. Years ago I made their marriage certificate, then a 2D piece to commemorate their first wedding anniversary, and now, a two part sculpture for their fifth wedding anniversary.
Notice the split across the middle, a duel angled cut was made. This allows the sculpture to be separated into two pieces.
This piece of wood is over two inches thick and has quite a lively edge on the back side. The sculpture was designed so each piece can stand alone or be put together to appear as one unit.
The Process
Initial sketch and calligraphy concept.
At this point I had not yet thought of the birds beak joint.
Full mock up
calligraphy draft with my favorite Tombow pen
Prepping wood with a hand plane and some sanding
Letter carving with v-gouge and a my one of a kind mallet
Wood burning, with Razortip pen
