Designing a Hebrew Font

Using my typographic and Adobe Illustrator skills, I designed two Hebrew fonts - one for the Classic Challah Board and one for the Live Edge. For the Classic Challah Board, I pulled inspiration directly from the style of text created by the v-gouge carving tool. For the Live Edge board, I added flourish to complement the unique edging. I love the crisp look of the Hebrew laser engraving

For years, I hand carved the Motzi prayer into each challah board. I would use a v-gouge and a wooden mallet to carve the Hebrew letters into the wood. Using a sharp chisel for such a precise task fills me with more joy than would seem normal. But in 2020, after my life partner Becca joined Windthrow, I was spending countless hours carving and the process became unsustainable - I was experiencing back pain and wasn’t getting enough time in my day for creative exploration. We decided to change our process and have the prayer laser engraved, and I continue to enjoy carving & burning in the personal inscriptions on the back of the board. The new technique looks beautiful and also ensures accuracy. At times when carving by hand, I would accidentally connect a Yud and a Nun to make an Ayin. These couple mistakes were corrected, but I have peace of mind to know that they are no longer possible.
