Brass Backer

A mezuzah is a small compartment for a klaf, or prayer scroll. Windthrow’s wooden mezuzot use a small brass insert to secure the klaf. Our logo, a ‘W’, is stamped into the small piece of metal. By shear coincidence this Roman character, the ‘W’, relates quite nicely to the Hebrew character, the ‘ש’ shin, which is found on the front of the mezuzah.

If you look closely in the image above, you’ll see the bottom of the brass insert is rounded. This was not always the case. During the first couple years of making this design, the brass inserts I used had all right angles. To fit this piece into the wood, I would use a chisel and create a small step with 90 degree angles. I executed this procedure hundreds of times… only to realize theres an easier way. Now the brass part is manufactured with a radius at the bottom. This allows me to fit the brass piece in directly off the router table! This has been a huge step towards a more efficient process.
