A Family of Spoons
I tried my hand at spoon carving the fist day I owned a curved chisel, otherwise known as a gouge. I liked how it turned out but cut myself substantially in the process. I was new to woodworking and quickly put spoon carving on the back burner. Slowly, I gained confidence with my hand skills, and I started producing spoons I was proud of.
Like anything, once the technical skill is developed the rest is left to design and functionality. This spoon above carved from Cherry is a small spoon I designed for a baby to be fed with. While my techniques continue to develop, I like to used a variety of hand tools to make these little sculptures. With a hook knife the bowl is formed, and I often cut out the handle using a band saw. The best tools come next, draw knife, sloyd style knife, and scraper. Then, I sand tediously.
